The Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program and PALS, the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening, work in concert to provide a comprehensive picture of kindergarten readiness. PALS assesses literacy skills, while VKRP assesses math, self-regulation, and social skills.
PALS provides a comprehensive assessment of young students' knowledge of the important literacy fundamentals that are predictive of future reading success. PALS is the state-provided screening tool for Virginia's Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI) and is used by 99% of school divisions in the state.
All VKRP assessments and resources are accessible to participating divisions via the PALS website, with a user's existing PALS login information. Teachers administer PALS-K as usual to assess students' literacy skills, and they also complete the VKRP assessments in the fall.
