Welcome Back from VKRP!
Fall 2021
It’s the start of the 2021-2022 school year, and the team at VKRP is thrilled to welcome back all Virginia Kindergarten teachers and send a warm welcome to a new group of Pre-Kindergarten teachers! We want to start by thanking you all for your commitment to your students’ success. As educators, you play a critical role in the physical, social-emotional, and cognitive development of Virginia’s children.
Large variations in children’s learning experiences during the 2020-2021 school year led to variability in children’s skills last spring, and will yield vastly different skill levels within classrooms this year. As a result, many students will need tailored academic and social emotional support across the school-year to engage in unfinished learning and to continue building new skills. In response, the Virginia Department of Education has supported school divisions, schools, families, and communities with various resources. Click here for a detailed resource list.
Fall Preparations
EMAS
This fall, you will have the option of conducting the Early Mathematics Assessment System (EMAS) to assess students’ mathematics skills either in-person or using the Remote EMAS. The Remote EMAS should only be administered in cases where it is not possible to administer the in-person EMAS.
CBRS
You will complete the Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS) to assess students’ self-regulation, social skills, and well-being through the online web portal after 4-6 weeks of virtual or in-person instruction.
PALS
Also, this fall you will have the option of conducting the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) either in-person or remotely. The remote option should only be taken in cases where it is not possible to administer PALS in-person.
VKRP Supports and Resources
VKRP provides a suite of data reports to assist school staff and families in gaining a better understanding of their students’ skills. VKRP also provides a variety of instructional resources to support students’ skills in areas where they need it the most. On the updated VKRP public website, school readiness resources are also available to help families support their student’s literacy, mathematics, self-regulation and social skills.
In addition to activities and linked resources, families with internet access can now download the fall and spring Family Resources Packet directly on the public website from the For Families page. We hope you’ll visit these pages and share them with your students’ families.
