Our Connection with Virginia Literacy Partnerships (VLP)

The Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) and VLP work together to provide a more comprehensive picture of children’s skills in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten.

A Collaborative Effort

Since 2015, VKRP has worked closely with the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) office, now VLP, to provide a snapshot of school readiness skills across multiple domains. VLP assesses literacy skills, while VKRP assesses mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills. Together, they aim to provide a more comprehensive picture of children’s skills in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

As literacy screeners, the Virginia Language & Literacy Screener: Pre-K (VALLS: Pre-K) and the PALS K-3 screener provide a comprehensive assessment of young students’ knowledge of the important literacy fundamentals that are predictive of future reading success. The VALLS: Pre-K and the PALS K-3 are the state-provided screening tools for Virginia’s Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI) and are used by all divisions in the state of Virginia.

The VKRP team works closely with VLP to provide an integrated online assessment system for teachers, administrators, and division and program leaders. The VKRP online assessment web portal is accessed through the VLP website. Additionally, the VKRP team collaborates with divisions and programs to provide resources to families and training for educators throughout the year.
