Our Connection with Virginia Literacy Partnerships (VLP)

The Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) and VLP work together to provide a more comprehensive picture of skills in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten.

A Collaborative Effort

Since 2015, VKRP has worked closely with Virginia Literacy Partnerships (VLP), formerly the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) office, to provide a snapshot of school readiness skills across multiple domains. The Virginia Language & Literacy Screening System (VALLSS), developed and supported by VLP, assesses language and literacy skills, while VKRP assesses mathematics, self-regulation, and social skills. Together, they aim to provide a more comprehensive picture of children’s skills in pre-kindergarten and kindergarten across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Virginia Language & Literacy Screening System (VALLSS) assesses children’s knowledge of important language and literacy fundamentals that are predictive of future reading success. The Virginia Language & Literacy Screener: Kindergarten (VALLS: K) is the state-provided screener for Virginia’s Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI) and is used by all divisions in Virginia.
