VKRP Fall 2023 Assessment Term Nearing a Close

Fall teacher

Thank you, Virginia Educators, for completing VKRP assessments this fall. It is hard to believe but the end of the VKRP Fall Assessment Term is quickly approaching. The end of the VKRP fall assessment term is Friday, November 3rd.

Assessment Term Details and Reminders

The VKRP Pre-k Assessment Calendar and the VKRP Kindergarten Assessment Calendar share recommended implementation timelines for both fall and spring terms.

As a reminder, the following is the guidance from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) regarding who is required to be assessed using VKRP.

Who is required to participate in VKRP?

Based on HB6001 Chapter 1, Acts of Assembly 2023 Special Session I Budget Appropriations language, all kindergarten students must be assessed in the fall and spring of each year. Additionally, starting in 2021, the Virginia General Assembly approved funding for the implementation of VKRP in publicly supported pre-kindergarten classrooms.

For 2023-2024, the following publicly funded three-year-old and four-year-old children will participate in VKRP in the fall and spring:

  • Children in Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) classrooms. This includes children who are enrolled in a VPI classroom but who may not be funded through VPI state dollars (e.g., an Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) student or a locally funded student in a classroom that is supported by VPI).
  • Children who are funded through VPI and are in a community-provider setting
  • Children in Virginia Early Childhood Foundation (VECF) Mixed Delivery Classrooms

Pre-k classrooms in public schools that are not funded by VPI (such as a full ECSE classroom, Head Start classroom, Title I classroom, or other locally supported Pre-k classroom) may choose to administer the VKRP assessments to their students, but it is not required.

How to check completion status?

To ensure that each student in your classroom has complete Early Mathematics Assessment System (EMAS) and Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS) assessments, check the overall status column on your VKRP Landing Page. In the example below, one of the students has “In Progress” as their overall status. This is because the CBRS has not been completed for this student. Once the CBRS has been completed, the overall status will change to the green circle and all students will have a  “Complete” status in this classroom. Please double check your overall status before the close of the fall term. Sometimes teachers forget to go back and complete the CBRS after finishing the EMAS!

Even if your division or program’s assessment window has ended, you should assess newly enrolled students with the EMAS and CBRS if students have been in your classroom for at least four weeks. If you are unsure whether a student who transferred from another school or division has complete assessments, you can find this information on your VKRP landing page or the VKRP Hotline Team can assist you.

How To Get Support

The VKRP and VLP teams are here to support you. Having complete VKRP assessment data on all students in the fall and spring of the 2023-2024 school year is essential for learning what skills children are bringing to the classrooms and how students’ skills are growing across the year. Please use the “support” button located in the lower right side of your web portal to chat in or call 866-301-8278.

You’ve Completed Your Assessments, Now What?

After completing assessments, we encourage educators to visit the reports’ pages on both the VKRP and VLP web portals.

Reporting Pages

Teacher reports include classroom and student level information and links to resources. Administrators also have access to student level information as well as exports to review school and program or division level data.
