Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program

Sharing family-friendly resources is now easier than ever! This blog highlights Take-Home Strategies found on the ECE Resource Hub, as well as provides an overview of the sections of each strategy’s page.
When educators partner with families to support Core Skills, every child thrives! That’s why the ECE Resource Hub now features brand new Take-Home Strategies that you can share with families. Developed by UVA-CASTL in partnership with the Virginia Department of Education, the ECE Resource Hub is a website that offers free, high-quality educational resources for those caring for children from birth to five.
Take-Home Strategies are organized around six Core Skills that young children are working to develop: Relate, Regulate, Think, Think- Math, Communicate, and Move. Each Core Skill includes individual skills that grow from infancy to preschool, like fine motor skills, phonological awareness, numeracy, and more.
Each Take-Home Strategy page is divided into four sections:
1. What It’s About: A short and sweet description of the Core Skill so families understand exactly what they’re supporting and why.

2. Activity Choice Board: Interactive flip cards with engaging activity ideas for the whole family. Activities can easily be adjusted based on each child’s abilities, interests, and what’s available at home.

3. Quick Cues: Examples of what families can do and say in the moment to strengthen their child’s skills.

4. Book Recommendations: No ECE Hub resource page is complete without suggestions for engaging, inclusive books to share with young children! There’s a link to an online read-aloud version and suggestion for bringing the story to life at home.

Here are a few tips for sharing the Take-Home Strategies with families:
