Blooming with VKRP

A Guide to Preparing for the Spring Assessment Term

This year’s winter in the Commonwealth has been one to remember! As the season fades and the days get longer, we are excited to see what blooms this spring! And speaking of spring, VKRP’s spring assessment term is right around the corner.

In this post, we’ll cover some tools and reminders to help you prepare for the upcoming assessment term with confidence and enthusiasm! You can find a checklist outlining these steps in your VKRP Manual as well as the VKRP Instructional Leader Guide.

Before the Assessment Term Begins

Things to Do:

  1. Confirm you have a complete set of spring materials by checking the materials list in the VKRP Manual. The fall and spring EMAS materials are different for each age, so check that you have spring materials for the correct grade level. If you find you’re missing any items from the kit, please reach out to your division/program’s key contact.
  2. Download and review the VKRP Spring 2025 Manual specific for your needs. As a reminder, there are separate manuals for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten. The downloadable versions of these manuals can be found in the web portal in “Essential Documents” under the “Assessment Guides” tab.
  3. Review the VKRP Online Training Modules. These are available in the web portal under the “Training” tab.
  4. Review the EMAS demonstration videos. These are available in the web portal in the “EMAS Video Demonstrations” dropdown of the “Assessment Guides” tab.
  5. Double-check that you have all your spring materials while you practice assessing using the spring EMAS and the CBRS. Practice assessments are available in the “Access Practice Assessments” dropdown of the “Assessment Guides” tab. As before, English and Spanish versions are available for the EMAS practice assessments. Although there were no changes made to the items from last year, it’s still a good idea to refamiliarize yourself with the items as you prepare for the term.
  6. Make sure your class roster is accurate and up to date. Any additions or changes to class rosters must be made through the VLP Legacy site. As a reminder, changes must be made by 8pm in order for you to see updates reflected the next day.
  7. Know your divisions’/programs’ designated assessment window. Keep in mind that your internal assessment window might be shorter than the overall VKRP assessment term.

During the Assessment Term (April 7 - May 16, 2025)

Things to Do:

  1. Complete EMAS assessments within your division/program’s designated assessment window. Should a new student join your class during VKRP’s assessment term, you should still plan to complete the EMAS with that student even if your division/program’s window has closed. As in previous terms, the EMAS assessment will automatically save progress throughout the assessment should you need to split up the administration.
  2. Complete the CBRS assessments. Make sure you read each item carefully as not all items follow the same answer pattern. If a student recently joined your class, remember that you’ll need to observe the student 4-6 weeks prior to completing the CBRS assessment on them. Like previous terms, each CBRS assessment must be completed in one sitting and progress is not saved in the system until you submit.

After the Assessment Term

Things to Do:

  1. Review classroom-level and student-level reports.
    • When viewing the classroom-level reports, you will see the following two buttons in the upper-right corner of the reports page:
      • “Current Report” – Download/print the current report you are viewing.
      • “All Reports” – Download/print all the available classroom-level reports at once.
    • When viewing the student-level reports, you will see the following three buttons in the upper-right corner of the reports page:
      • “Current Report” – Download/print the current report you are viewing.
      • “All Reports” – Download/print all available reports for that individual student you have selected.
      • “All Students” – This option will produce the specific report you are viewing for all students in your classroom. An example of when this option can be particularly helpful is when you’re pulling the Family Information Report to prepare for meetings with families.
  1. Collaborate with other educators to analyze VKRP data and explore resources that can be used to aid student growth in the last weeks of school. The VKRP Interpreting Reports document, located in “Understanding Reports” under the “Reports” tab, contains guidance for understanding student scores, especially on the growth reports. You’ll also find guidance on analyzing the data as well as locating instructional resources to support continued student skill development.
  2. Share data/reports with families (as your school, division, and/or program protocols allow). Additionally, you can share the Family Resource Packets with families at the end of the year to encourage student learning over the summer months.
  3. Inventory VKRP kit materials and alert school or program leaders if new materials need to be ordered for next year. Our VKRP Materials Team will be communicating with division and program contacts later this spring to gather fall 2025 material orders.
