Moving through Spring with VKRP Assessments, Reports, and Resources

Spring is all about growth. The trees begin to bud, the grass and leaves turn a lush green and flowers bloom.  This is also a time when your students demonstrate their academic and social-emotional growth through end-of-year assessments.

Many of you have already begun administering the EMAS and completing the CBRS this spring, while we know others will assess in May. No matter where you are in the process – before, during, or after assessments – this week’s blog has something for you!

April - May:

Prepare for and complete assessments

  • If your assessment window hasn’t opened, you’ll want to spend some time preparing for assessments. The VKRP Teacher Manual located on the web portal under the tab – Assessment Guides > Essential Documents > Spring is a great place to start. The manual shares the steps for preparing to assess as well as other helpful information for using the assessments, reports, and resources that are a part of VKRP.

  • Conduct the VKRP and VLP assessments with all pre-kindergartners in publicly funded VPI and VECF Mixed Delivery classrooms and all kindergartners.

  • During the math assessment: If you or a student needs a break during the assessment, the EMAS is designed to continually save your data while you assess students. If you or the student needs to take a break, click on your “HOME” button in the menu at the top of the VKRP page. The student’s assessment will read “Resume” on your VKRP landing page. The system will take you back to where you left off the next time you work with that student.

  • If you have a problem or question during assessments, contact the VKRP Hotline Team using the support chat, 866-301-8278 or vkrp@virginia.edu Hotline staff members are able to reset assessments if needed or move data within a classroom if scores are assigned to the incorrect student.

April - June:

Access reports and resources and use your data

  • Review your classroom and student level reports. The VKRP Interpreting Reports document, located under the Reports tab > Understanding Reports, contains guidance for understanding the VKRP reports and student assessment data. You’ll also find guidance on locating instructional resources to support continued skill development.
  • While reviewing reports teachers have asked about the development of the pre-k skill development bands and the kindergarten benchmarks. These thresholds were developed using a process that includes collective consideration of the following pieces of information: (a) EMAS data from the Commonwealth of Virginia (b) the Mathematics Learning Trajectories (Sarama & Clements, 2009; Clements & Sarama, 2021) and the Virginia Early Learning and Development Standards & Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning (2016); and (c) a review of early childhood mathematics research.

  • Share student progress with families using the Family Information Report. Share resources with families through the Family Resource packet (available in English and Spanish) and the VKRP public website, which contains links to family-friendly resources to support student skills at home.
  • Teachers often ask, “will families be able to see the notes from the comment boxes on the assessments?” No, any notes you made in the system while conducting the assessments will print out on the Teacher Comments report available for you to download or print out on your Reporting Dashboard > Student Level reports.

  • Reach out to VKRP if you need help finding and/or interpreting reports or in locating the VKRP Instructional Resources.

May - June:

Download reports and share data

  • Share data for current students with teachers who will be instructing students next year (e.g., kindergarten and first grade teachers). The 2022-2023 VKRP student and classroom reports are available to download and print until the end of June, when the system resets for the next school year. (Note: Division/Program/School level data will still be available after June in the history report function for the data exports.)

For downloading and printing your VKRP Classroom Level reports, you will see the following buttons in the upper right corner of the reports. You can download/print the current report you are viewing, or all the Classroom Level reports at one time using “All Reports.”

For the Student Level reports, you’ll see the following buttons in the upper right corner of the reports. You can download/print the current report you are viewing or download “All Reports” for that individual student. You can also download the current report for all students in your classroom by selecting “All Students”.

We are here to support you as you have questions before, during, and after you administer the VKRP spring assessments as well as while you use the data reports and resources. Be on the lookout for our upcoming blog dedicated to discussing how to interpret your growth reports and how to use the data during the final weeks of this school year.
