March Madness Continues!

In our last blog, the PALS coaches shared 3 tips for planning your Spring PALS assessments. This week, the VKRP Team assists in a 3 point play with – “before, during, and after” tips – to help you “spring” into action for VKRP assessments!

Before assessing:

Unlike our student athletes, who have been playing all season, we need to get warmed up again before starting the VKRP Spring assessments. These tips will help you get prepared:

  • Determine if you’ll be using the Early Mathematics Assessment System (EMAS) in-person and/or remotely, and train accordingly.
    • In-person EMAS:
      • Use the training components located within the VKRP assessment portal to prepare to administer the Spring in-person EMAS.
    • Remote EMAS:
      • The remote EMAS consists of a subset of the spring in-person items and includes adaptations for remote administration. We strongly recommend that you prepare for administering the remote EMAS by doing the following:
        • Watch the NEW Remote EMAS Training Module
        • View the video demonstration of the Remote EMAS
        • Download the Remote EMAS PowerPoint
        • Use the Remote EMAS practice assessment along with the PowerPoint to become familiar with the items and the flow of administration.

During the Assessment Window:

Stick to Your Game Plan!

  • Implement in-person assessments according to CDC guidelines shared in the VKRP Program Manual Spring 2021.
  • Observe student skills and behaviors in-person and online for several weeks prior to completing your ratings for the CBRS.
  • Once an assessment is started in a particular mode (i.e., in-person or remote), it needs to be completed in that same mode.

After Completing Assessments:

Review reports and select instructional resources to support student growth!

  • Review students’ growth across the year. VKRP provides Growth Reports, which display fall and spring scores in math, self-regulation, and social skills.
  • Use your data. With instructional time still remaining in the year, use spring data to select activities and strategies from the VKRP resources that support your students in continued skill development.

Taking the time now to “up” your game for the VKRP assessment season, will position you and your students for a springtime win!
