VLP Welcomes You!
This week’s blog was written by our colleagues from Virginia Literacy Partnerships (VLP). Stay up to date on all the exciting things happening with literacy in Virginia this year!
Welcome, new and returning educators! Here are some helpful information and resources about literacy in Virginia!
Fall Screening
Screening Requirements
All Kindergarteners must be screened.
Any three-year-old (by September 30) and any four-year-old in a VPI class and/or who receives Virginia Early Childhood Foundation (VECF) Mixed Delivery funding is required to take the Virginia Language & Literacy Screener: Pre-K (VALLS: Pre-K) in fall and spring.
Assessment Calendar
The assessment calendar is located on the Login page in the Helpful Links box. For the fall term, the four-week assessment period for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten begins six weeks from first day of school.
For all terms, VLP assessments must be administered within any two-week (total of 10 instructional days) window within the four-week assessment period. Contact your VLP Division Representative for division-specific requirements and for any questions regarding your assessment window.
Intervention Requirements
All kindergarten students who are below benchmark (via in-person or remote-assessment) require 2.5 hours of additional literacy instruction per week for the school year.
Kindergarten Previous Terms Reports
If your kindergarten students took the VALLS: Pre-K assessment last year, those results will display under your reports tab. Skill Development Bands for code-based subtests are provided. For more information on these bands, go to your Resources tab, Administering Assessments page.
Virginia Literacy Act and the New Screener

Virginia Language & Literacy Screening System (VALLSS)
As you may already know, we are piloting the new VALLS: K–3 literacy screener. 17 divisions are using VALLS this fall. This new screener will be released statewide in fall 2024. Please visit the VLP Homepage for more information.
